Foot in the Door 4

I finished my apple painting just in time to enter it in the Foot in the Door 4 show at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. This exhibit has been held once every ten years since 1980 and is open to all Minnesota artists. All works must fit within a 12-inch square box.

The 2010 foot in the Door exhibit will run from February 19 until June 13. You can still see The Foot in the Door 2000 Exhibit online.

I titled my painting "Apple Family (Homage to Cezanne)." It reminded me of a family portrait, and it was inspired by an early Cezanne painting. I used three varieties of apples: Braeburn, Red Delicious, and Granny Smith. I made my arrangement on a cutting board and propped a big pad of tinted charcoal paper behind it. I made several digital photos and picked my favorite to use for the painting. I printed out the photo in 8" X 10" size and used graphite paper to transfer the composition to an 8" X 10" canvas.

Below is Cezanne's painting "Glass and Apples" (1879-1882).

Preview Dr. Sketchy's Twin Cities

More Info at: http://www.myspace.com/drsketchys_twincities

Where art class meets cabaret, Dr. Sketchy's will cure you of every boring art class you've ever been to.

The common view on life-drawing classes involves a silent room, a bored model, and no liquor in sight. From the mind of New York artist and burlesque performer Molly Crabapple comes Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School, the cabaret life drawing party that has taken the hearts of hipsters from New York to Melbourne. A combination of performance, life-drawing sessions, amazingly complex costumes, and all the booze in town, Dr. Sketchy’s has become THE art event for all artist and awesome hipsters to attend. Of course we had no choice but to start our very own – Dr. Sketchy’s Twin Cities!

At any Dr. Sketchy's event you can grab a chair, a drink, and enjoy an eyeful of intriguingly clad and talented performance artists. We plan on getting only the hippest hosts and the coolest models with the weirdest careers-- burlesque girls, drag kings, roller derby girls, bodybuilders and sideshow freaks. Naturally as music runs hand in hand with inspiration, we’ll have good tunes. Dr. Sketchy’s also features irreverent drawing contests, where the lucky winner can win such prizes as booze or fancy trinkets from local retailers.

All scribblers, doodlers, cartoonists and Toulouse Lautrec wannabes are welcome. Come armed with sketchpads; dry drawing materials or simply a good sense of humor. Thankfully talent is not a pre requisite. In fact you can just stick to the drinking and enjoy the show if that’s your skill set. If Dr. Sketchy's doesn't cure what ails you, at least the booze will. As always, booze = 21 and up.

Fourth Sundays in the afternoon at the 331 Club, 331 13th Ave NE Minneapolis.
Admission $10. Registration recommended.

The 2008 Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association Art-A-Whirl is this weekend May16-18. For information see the NEMAA website.

Utrecht Plein Air Painting Events

Utrecht held a plein air painting event in Loring Park on Saturday, May 10. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate. I attended this, along with a couple of other people. I attempted a pastel drawing but it started to rain earlier than expected, so not much was accomplished.

Another plein air painting event is planned for May 31 at Eloise Butler Wildlife Garden. Details can be found by going to www.utrechtart.com and clicking on the link for the Minneapolis store.
